Without EPD — admission to an Austrian university is blocked. The updated format has 4 written parts + oral, each with its own minimum score. Fail one part and you fail the whole exam, even if your total would have passed. Preparation in groups of ≤6 with a WU Wien student.
A quick walkthrough of our online prep platform and how we prepare you for the EPD exam.
You receive an academic or journalistic text (Sachtext) and must determine whether statements are true, false, or not mentioned in the text. This seems simple — but this is where students most often lose points due to vague wording and traps.
Find the specific passage. Every correct answer has a basis in the text. If you can't find the supporting text — it's most likely 'Nicht im Text'.
Read academic texts regularly. Süddeutsche Zeitung, Zeit Online, Spiegel — read these daily. This trains both reading speed and vocabulary simultaneously.
The grammar section tests your command of B2–C1 structures and vocabulary. One of the main task types is Satzergänzung: you receive the beginning of a sentence and must complete it correctly — no multiple choice. A difference of 1–2 marks often comes down to minor grammatical errors or an ill-fitting word choice.
Common mistake types. Lexical (words that don't fit contextually), grammatical (wrong case, endings, or conjugation), register (colloquial word instead of formal), and punctuation.
Context decides everything. Always read the prompt carefully. Even a grammatically correct continuation will lose points if it does not fit the semantic context of the beginning of the sentence.
Review systematically. Konjunktiv II and Passiv are the most frequent grammar topics. Without automatic recognition of forms — you lose precious time on the exam.
The most important and difficult part. You must write an argumentative text (Kommentar, Leserbrief, or Erörterung) on a given topic. Structure, argumentation, register, and grammar are all assessed. Time is limited — you need to write quickly and in a structured way.
Structure comes first. Einleitung → Hauptteil (minimum 2 arguments with examples) → Schluss. Without clear structure — you can't get a good grade, even with flawless language.
Register must be formal and consistent. No 'ich denke', no colloquial phrases. 'Es ist anzumerken, dass...' and 'Dies verdeutlicht...' — that's the right register.
Write fast. You have limited time. Don't hunt for the perfect word — write structurally and grammatically correctly. Word count matters: the text must meet requirements.
You hear a lecture, interview, or academic discussion, and must answer questions about the content. The difficulty is the natural speech rate and specific academic vocabulary. Most students don't train listening enough.
Listen to authentic audio daily. Deutschlandfunk, SRF, Zeit Online Podcast — 15–20 minutes daily will dramatically improve your listening comprehension.
Take notes while listening. Write down key words, names, numbers. Then answer questions based on notes, not memory.
Don't panic if you miss something. Keep listening. Don't try to fill in missed parts with guessing — focus on what's coming next.
The oral exam takes place a few weeks after the written part. You need to speak fluently on academic topics, conduct a discussion, argue your position, and respond to the examiner's questions. Pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and fluency are all assessed.
Keep speaking, even if unsure. Silence costs more than an imperfect phrase. The examiner assesses communicative ability, not perfect grammar.
Prepare 'strategic phrases'. 'Das ist eine interessante Frage...', 'Es gibt verschiedene Aspekte zu berücksichtigen...' — these phrases buy thinking time and demonstrate language level.
Practice speaking aloud daily. Read texts aloud, give monologues on Textproduktion topics. 10 minutes a day — and in a month you'll speak much more fluently.
The EPD has been reformed to a total duration of 180 minutes. Below is the breakdown of sections and the minimum points required for each part to pass the exam.
Total passing score: 45 to 75 points overall
The exam can be repeated at the next session. Universities typically allow a maximum of 4 semesters to pass the EPD.
Registration is exclusively through VWU Wien (Sechshauser Straße 33A).
I sat the EPD myself and know where students lose points, which Satzergänzung traps are the most deceptive, and how to structure a Textproduktion under time pressure. My course is not a translated textbook — it's real preparation from someone who walked this path.
A small group means real feedback at every session. I know exactly where each student makes mistakes and can adjust preparation in time.
Every written assignment is analyzed in detail: structure, register, argumentation, grammar. Not just 'there are errors', but precisely what, why, and how to fix it.
Structured course with progressive difficulty increase. From grammar and vocabulary — to full exam simulations in the final weeks.
The oral part gets dedicated attention. We practice academic monologue, discussion, and strategic phrases. Students go to their Mündliche without panic.
Small groups of up to 6 people give personal attention to everyone — like individual tutoring, but with the benefit of live group dynamics.

«I'm very happy with the EPD prep course. I loved working with the teacher and in the group with other participants. Each lesson was interesting and useful — two hours flew by as one, but I left every class with new knowledge and built up my vocabulary without even realising it. Lessons are well structured — between every part (grammar, reading, listening, speaking) you feel the balance, and I never had the feeling I was missing anything. Really glad I chose Oleksandr as my teacher: he's a truly caring, attentive and responsible teacher — and you can genuinely have a laugh with him too. Wholeheartedly recommend to everyone preparing for the exam.»

«The course didn't just meet my expectations — it exceeded them. Beyond detailed and high-quality materials, I got loads of support, knowledge, experience and new connections. What I loved most: the professionalism as a teacher and sincerity as a friend, the enthusiasm, constant feedback, and new learning tools (the platform and Quizlet words). The weekly Sprachklub was a highlight — I not only started thinking and speaking German freely, but also met other great participants. Overall a wonderful period — I wholeheartedly recommend this course.»

«Really liked the structure of the course and how it's built. The intensity and informativeness are high-level, giving a fairly quick result — thanks to this approach, my understanding of the language and its nuances improved significantly. Special thanks for the empathy and the individual approach to learning. This course is great preparation not only for the exam, but for improving your German overall.»
«The course was great — lots of lessons and tasks that motivated me to study German more, it was engaging and I constantly learned something new. The lessons gave a huge impact not only for exam prep, but for language learning in a short time. Everything is explained in detail and conversations are in German, which helps you focus on the language and think in it. This course was definitely worth it.»
